Comprehensive Eye Exams

An eye exam is a thorough investigation of the visual system as a whole. This examination provides an accurate diagnosis of any refractive findings pertaining to the need for any visual correction. It also includes a detailed ocular health assessment of the internal and external parts of the eyes. All findings lead to a recommendation for the best long term visual care for the patient.

Contact Lens Fittings and Evaluations

Care is always taken to make the best contact lens choices for our patients. An external ocular evaluation and tear analysis is used to guide us to the most comfortable and healthy contact lens choice for each patient. We will take as much time as needed to ensure the long term health and safety at each contact lens fitting.
Our doctors fit gas permeable and soft contact lens designs from all the lens manufacturers. We utilize some obscure brands of lenses for those difficult to fit patients as well.

Contact Lens Teaching

Our technicians spend as much time as necessary to make sure that our patients are comfortable inserting, removing and handling lenses. This is a skill that we don’t take lightly. Safety is our number one concern and patients are expertly trained before they leave our office with contact lenses. Some patients will require more than one teaching session and there is no limit for those who have difficulties with lenses in the beginning. We carefully follow up with these patients to make sure that they are progressing properly with their contact lenses.

Dry Eye Treatment

Many patients suffer from dry eye. This can be with or without contact lenses and there can be several reasons for their symptoms. Dryness often increases with age. It is also associated with menopause and some medications such as antihistamines, antidepressants and birth control pill. It will also be exacerbated by dusty and dry environments. Patients will often complain that symptoms increase with excessive time spent using the computer. Dry eye conditions cannot always be eliminated. The best approach is to manage the symptoms with a combination of artificial tears, punctual plugs and dietary supplements.

Cataract and Glaucoma Testing and Referrals

Both of these conditions are commonly found in every practice. It is essential to make the correct diagnosis and refer the patient to the best specialists for care. Cataract is the most common cause for vision loss in adult patients. Fortunately, removing it when needed provides the patients with a permanent visual solution. The cataract removal is painless and done in minutes. The visual results are usually excellent and we try to attain this for our patients by referring them to the best ophthalmologists.
Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease in which the optic nerve cells are damaged by excessive fluid pressure in the eye. It is the second leading cause of blindness in North America behind diabetes. It often runs in families and there are other risk factors to be aware of. The most troubling concern for us is that most patients don’t have any symptoms. It is essential to watch these high risk patients carefully and look for subtle changes that may indicate that the onset of the disease has occurred. We have the technology to do this and high risk patients are encouraged to have regular glaucoma testing.

Lasik Referrals and Co-management

Lasik refractive surgery has been an innovation to our industry. Its popularity is still very strong and patients inquire about their candidacy every day in our practice. Dr. Tepperman had successful corrective surgery in 2000 and he has had hundreds of his own patients have the same success without glasses or contact lenses. Although the surgery is rather simple and so many thousands of patients have had it, it cannot be taken for granted. As primary care optometrists it is our role to choose the best surgeon for our patients and make the referral that will give them the best overall results. Furthermore, it is essential to carefully manage the healing of our patients post-operatively and communicate these findings with the surgical centre.
